Scuba group to get deep into Monopoly game

Divers will compete underwater in a tournament that helps raise money for the YMCA.

According to the official Web site of Monopoly, the longest game in history lasted 70 straight days.

However, that record was set on land.

On Saturday at the cool water pool of the Salem Family YMCA, certified scuba divers will put their skills to the test by seeing how long they can play Monopoly -- underwater. The event takes place from noon to 4 p.m.

The underwater Monopoly tournament is co-sponsored by Aquatrek Adventures in Diving, a Salem business offering instruction in scuba diving and snorkeling and equipment sales and rental.

Spectators 12 and older will be able to watch the game-playing through 30-minute training sessions available for $20 a person, said Rick Wolfe, Aquatrek president.

To waterproof the game, a standard board, pieces and paper money will be laminated and weighted. Velcro will help the pieces stay in place, Wolfe said.

The player who amasses the most funny money will be dubbed winner of the tournament. Prizes include scuba gear donated by Aquatrek.

The $50 collected from each player will be donated to the YMCA Partners of Youth Program.

The program offers scholarships to people who cannot afford membership and activity fees at the facility.

"Part of our mission is to never turn anyone away because they can't pay," said John Levin, director of development and communications for the YMCA Roanoke Valley.

Levin said the event will also introduce scuba diving to an inland community.

He said this event will be a first step in finding out if scuba diving is something the community is interested in by measuring the response and attendance of the event.
