Though
the elections aren't until November, the Wythe County Democratic and Republican
parties have begun to choose their candidates for the local races.
This year's ballot will
be full as many of the local offices are up for election. This fall, Wythe
County residents can vote for candidates for four seats on the Wythe County
Board of Supervisors, four seats on the Wythe County School Board, the clerk of
Circuit Court, commonwealth's attorney, sheriff, commissioner of revenue and
treasurer.
According to Wythe
County Republican Party Chairman Aubrey O'Quinn, the Republicans have nominated
candidates for many of the offices up for grabs. The incumbents include Doug
King for sheriff, Sam Crockett for treasurer and Gerald Mabe for commonwealth's
attorney.
The party also has a
number of challenger candidates including Walter Widelo for commissioner of
revenue. The Republican candidates for the Board of Supervisors include Jack
Weaver for supervisor at large, Rodney Dunford for the Speedwell District and
Maggie Poole for the Fort Chiswell District. According to O'Quinn, none of the
candidates for the board has held public office before.
According to O'Quinn,
the Republicans recessed until June 11, the day before the candidate
registration deadline, to see if anyone else was interested in running for
office on the Republican ticket.
On the Democratic side,
quite a few incumbents and a few challenger candidates are running on the
party's ticket.
According to Wythe
County Democratic Party Chairman John DiYorio, the incumbents include Mary
Cassell for commissioner of revenue and Hayden Horney for clerk of Circuit
Court. Incumbents on the Board of Supervisors include Bucky Sharitz for
supervisor at large, Lisa Eaton for the Fort Chiswell District and Martha
Umberger for the West Wytheville District.
The challenger
candidates include Robert Kegley for treasurer, Joe Thomas for sheriff and Gene
Horney for the Board of Supervisors Speedwell District.
Like the Republican
Party, DiYorio said, the Democrats have recessed until more candidates can be
found; although, he said instead of holding a last-minute meeting, the party's
executive committee has been given the power to certify candidates.
Election Day 2007 will
fall on Nov. 6.
