Louisiana State
University’s The Southern Review has selected
a creative non-fiction essay by Bland author Kristina Gorcheva-Newberry for its
spring 2009 issue. The quarterly publication features poetry, short fiction and
non-fiction from established authors and struggling writers.
“It was an honor,” Gorcheva-Newberry stated by phone recently. “Not that I was
swept off my feet, but I was honored. It is a highly ranked magazine. Among the
literary magazines, it is one of the best.”
Leslie A. Green is the magazine’s business manager and
marketing director. She noted being published in The Southern Review is a big
deal.
“It is a very important literary journal,” Green remarked
by phone from her office in Baton
Rouge, La. “Only
about 2 percent of unsolicited manuscripts get published.”
According to her, some authors are asked to write for the
magazine. Unsolicited manuscripts are placed in the “flush” pile where they are
eventually read by an editorial staff.
Those catching the interest of the staff, Green said, are
forwarded to other editors for additional scrutiny. She noted the manuscripts
making the cut are published.
“We read everything,” Green said. “Work is published purely on merit.”
This marks Gorcheva-Newberry’s 15th publication. She began
writing eight years ago while at Radford
University where she
earned a master’s degree in English.
Gorcheva-Newberry has completed her master’s degree in
creative writing from Hollins
University. She will
teach creative writing there in the fall term.
A Russian émigré, she grew up in
Moscow and graduated from Moscow State
Linguistic University.
She worked as a school teacher and interpreter before moving to the U.S. in 1994.
She is married to Bland
County native Randy
Newberry. They have a 10-year-old son, Albert Newberry.
