A textile company is interested in locating in the area,
and 500 applicants turned out for the survey application process last week at
the Virginia Employment Commission office in Galax.
This survey is to see if there is enough interest from the
local workforce to start an operation here.
If the company should decide to locate in the Twin
Counties, it would create 300 jobs.
VEC Director Bill Webb said he doesn't know the specifics
at this point, since the company is corresponding with county officials, which
are protecting its identity.
“The surveys turned out well, and hopefully we'll hear good
news soon,” said Webb. “If we can get this company in here, it will be a big
boost for our citizens.
“The applicants looked good. I think we have the
best-trained employees, most loyal, most dedicated, and they're ready to go to
work today.”
According to an advertisement placed in The Gazette, the
company is seeking 200 sewing operators, 25 workers, five for gerber cutting,
five spreaders, five warehouse workers, three shipping clerks, 15 material
handlers, five lead personnel and 10 bundlers.
In management, the company is seeking one employee in
purchasing, six supervisors, one mechanical engineer, one industrial engineer,
two production controllers, two quality controllers, two accountants and two
human resource reps. Salaries in management would be $25,000-$50,000.
The textile company also would hire one plant manager and
one designer, with salaries advertised at $50,000-plus.
Webb said the survey process is part of a cooperative
effort with the neighboring counties. Landing a large employer would be good
for everyone.
“The VEC is standing shoulder-to-shoulder with the other
jurisdictions,” said Webb. “We're doing everything we can do to make it happen,
and we'll do anything we can to help any locality to help businesses come to
the area.”
