Steve Hale, of
Pulaski County Public Schools, has been honored as School Psychologist of the
Year by his peers of the Virginia Academy of School Psychologists (VASP). The
award was presented earlier this month at their fall convention in Virginia Beach.
Hale has worked in Pulaski
County for 31 years.
He is the current past president of VASP and is the first
sitting executive board member to receive the honor.
The award committee cited Hale’s commitment to his
profession, advocacy to children and families in Virginia, as well as his progressive
leadership role as reasons for his nomination.
Hale has been a leading force in developing a Response to
Intervention model in Pulaski
County.
The Response to Intervention model seeks to helps students
with academic and behavioral concerns as early as possible so that they can
achieve success in school.
He also takes great interest in the changing role of the
school psychologist and has been a leader for other school psychology
departments in the commonwealth.
Hale is described by his colleagues as a compassionate
individual who exemplifies what is best about the profession of school
psychology.
Terri Sisson, VASP’s president said, “I cannot think of a
more deserving person to receive this award. (Hale) goes beyond the day-to-day
responsibilities of the school psychologist to best meet the needs of the
students and families in his district.”
Hale will now go on to the national level to be considered
for the national School Psychologist of the Year Award in 2009.
