Rick Boucher is expected to announce funds for expanded sewer and water capacity at the New River Valley Commerce Park.

New River Valley leaders say an economic development announcement today will reveal new federal funding for sewer and water services to support business expansion.

U.S. Rep. Rick Boucher, D-Abingdon, will announce "a major provision of federal funding to benefit the New River Valley Commerce Park, which will bring new job opportunities to the region," according to a news release.

The announcement is scheduled at 3:30 p.m. at New River Valley Airport near Dublin.

A government authority is marketing 973 acres of farmland adjacent to the airport as suitable for large-scale employers.

The "park" doesn't have any businesses or tenants yet. But the park doesn't have all the bells and whistles officials believe it needs.

For several years, officials have discussed a desire to increase the capacity of water and sewer infrastructure available in the proposed park to 6 million gallons a day from the current level of less than 200,000 gallons of capacity, said Aric Bopp, who directs the New River Valley Economic Development Alliance.

Bopp did not reveal specifics of Boucher's announcement. But Chris McKlarney, Giles County administrator, said it is funding for expanded water and sewer capacity.

McKlarney did not reveal specifics either, but said, "this will allow us to truly cover a much larger scale."
